P21 is a tetrapeptide (DAVP sequence) derived from the C-terminal region of CNTF (Ciliary Neurotrophic Factor) that stimulates hippocampal neurogenesis — the formation of new neurons in the brain's primary memory and spatial navigation center — without triggering CNTF's adverse off-target effects including severe weight loss, inflammation, cachexia, and broad systemic toxicity that limit CNTF's research utility.
