Research Overview
BPC-157 (Body Protection Compound-157) is a synthetic pentadecapeptide of 15 amino acids, originally isolated from human gastric juice. It is one of the most extensively studied healing peptides in preclinical research, with over 500 published studies from 1993 through 2025. Its primary mechanisms include activation of the VEGFR2 signaling pathway to promote angiogenesis (new blood vessel formation), ERK1/2 signaling to enhance fibroblast activity and endothelial cell migration, upregulation of growth hormone receptor expression, and reduction of inflammatory cytokines. In animal models, BPC-157 has demonstrated protective and regenerative effects across muscle, tendon, ligament, bone, gut lining, heart, and nervous system tissue — earning the descriptors neuroprotective, gastroprotective, cardioprotective, and musculoskeletal protective. It is metabolized in the liver with a half-life under 30 minutes and cleared by the kidneys. As of 2025, three small pilot studies have been conducted in humans; larger controlled trials are pending. How It Works
VEGFR2 Signaling
BPC-157 activates vascular endothelial growth factor receptor 2, triggering angiogenesis — the formation of new blood vessels that deliver oxygen and nutrients to damaged tissue. This is particularly important in tendons and ligaments, which are naturally poorly vascularized.
ERK1/2 Pathway Activation
Through extracellular signal-regulated kinase signaling, BPC-157 stimulates fibroblast proliferation and endothelial cell migration — two key cellular processes needed to rebuild damaged connective tissue and restore tissue integrity.
Inflammatory Cytokine Modulation
BPC-157 reduces pro-inflammatory cytokines while upregulating growth hormone receptor expression in damaged cells, accelerating the transition from the inflammatory phase of healing to the proliferative, tissue-rebuilding phase.
